Summertime (a la Dad)

Summer of Dad has commenced.

This means there will be copious amounts of sunscreen used, lots of dirty socks (when those are worn at all), extremely messy hair and a haphazardly cleaned house.

Today was an exceptionally busy day for everyone. M had to work at Disney early. The boys had their first swimming lessons this morning. I had a doctors appointment, quickly followed by V having his 2 year check on the complete opposite side of town. So there was a lot of frantic driving around and quick phone calls containing hurried shouted instructions.

“Make sure he’s clean, you know, down ‘there'”

“Please dress him cutely”

“Snack!!! He needs a snack!!!”

Ok, so most of the shouting was regarding V. And it wasn’t that loud of shouting, maybe more of a brisk chatter. And it was mostly me directing my  ‘chatter’ at M. You know, since he is clearly not an adult and can’t doing anything by himself without my direction.

Swimming lessons went very well. V learned how to blow bubbles, kick and jump to Daddy on the count of 3.

My doctor’s appointment went very well too.

And so did V’s. Extremely well, in fact. V is almost 3 feet tall, weights 32 lbs and is quite the charmer. And, also to my delight, has a language level of a 3 year old. How wonderful is that!! I was delighted to hear that.

F-ing DELIGHTED.

He is stringing words together at a higher level than she expected him to be and his vocabulary was a lot larger as well.

M and I did a total parental high-five over the phone while I was relaying all of this to him.

We (that would be the ‘royal We’) are also not having any wheat issues right now. We are, in fact, un-wheat-free. Wheat is living in our house again and people are eating and enjoying it. We are still on strict peanut avoidance though and are contemplating a reintroduction of strawberries. We also are having no eczema issues too. And no asthma problems. And are also not sick.

What the freak dimension did we move into? Sheeeeeeiiit!! It’s just effing crazy positive health over here!!! (although, please forget about the puke-post from Friday, that was just a sugar issue)

Well, whatever freak health dimension we are currently in, it is not the tidy dimension. The house was cleaned so weirdly that I was in shock. And M was at work so I couldn’t call him and ask him things like “Where did you put V’s blanket that I just washed?” or “Where is the NetFlix dvd?” or “Why is the carpet really really wet?” (that one I actually know the answer to).

Or “Why is there a random roll of toilet paper on the kitchen counter?”, “What’s that stain on the floor?” and “Why are  your swim trunks in the garage?”. Ok, I made that last one up… they were in the kitchen sink.

Ok, I made that one up too. They were just in the guest bathroom sink. *sigh* Kind of a letdown now, eh?

Oh Summer of Dad, how I missed you! I am pretty sure you will be better than last years. Pretty darn sure…

xoxo a.m.

Emotions (and farm animals)

Can I indulge in a little emotion for just about a paragraph or so?

Tonight Vince said to me “Night-night Mama. Bye-bye!” and then he closed his bedroom door in my face and I heard him clumsily climb up onto his little bed to the applause of Daddy.

Yes, that’s right. He only wanted Daddy. Only wanted to hold Daddy’s hand when we were walking. Only wanted Daddy Daddy Daddy. And in fact, when he didn’t get Daddy, he had a complete melt-down.

And then you could hear my heart breaking. Because he used to want me and now he doesn’t. I had to hold back the tears and stuff my obvious hurt feelings in my back pocket.

I mean, how much of an Emotional Cancer am I that I get my feelings hurt by a two year old?

About 15 minutes later, M emerged from V’s bedroom, doing a slow-mo victory dance. It was the first time since the big boy bed that he has successfully put V to bed. We totally high, low and too slow fived each other.

I missed him saying ‘Mummy too’ tonight and his little warm body snuggles. I missed reading him a book. I missed everything. I only got the lame things like changing a poop diaper, washing his face and brushing his teeth. Then in swept Daddy, like a superhero, with books about Nemo and baby farm animals.

Geez, Jame, wallow enough? Ok, really, I think its amazing that Vince and Daddy and a team. It is the Summer of Dad, after all.

Deep cleansing breath in and out and here’s hoping for some balance. And some emotional control.

PS: I hope I get some Mummy time this summer too…

Home Depot of Dads

dad-blog

Monday night, M and I reclining in the living room.

We have survived. 4 whole days of teething. 4 new teeth coming in. An interesting new habit I like to call ‘Tantrum”. An unfortunate lack of regular naps (he is very stubborn). Oh, and the end of the Cheezie stash in our apartment. It’s been a tough couple of days….

Regardless, we both finished a lovely dish of homemade Pad Thai, a few glasses of red wine and are watching some Burn Notice (which is our latest non-thinking evening entertainment. We watch it while I blog and M plays around on his DS…. fights Ogres, Dragons and Orcs and other things like that.

So tonight I dedicate to my darling M.

Mr Mum, as he is known this summer. Mr Mum is awesome. Every morning V and Mr Mum walk to the park to play. Every morning they meet their new dog friends, Jake and Pretty, on their way to the park. I know they have fun as the stroller comes home covered in some kind of new substance which I think is a combination of grapes, cheese and sand. It is sort of like cement (I noticed it was as I was trying to scrub it off the stroller this evening).

Breakfast and lunch are duly (and lovingly made). Outfits are hastily and poorly put together, but in a wonderful sort of way. Tops and bottoms are the opposite of matching. He would be the Dad that the other Mums in the park oooh and aah over. And bring extra snacks for. And dote on. Man, this could be trouble….. He is rather lost looking and adorable…. that’s M I mean, not V…..

He is such a good Dad. All Dads are good dads, but it is an amazing thing to watch a new Dad at work. M is unlocking abilities that I never knew exsisted in him. He is mastering new levels. His skill level is rising.

And I am playing too much  Mob Wars on FB.

Regardless, M is total Major Dad this summer. He is all schedules,  parameters and other technical terms I can’t think of right now. Everything is organized. Listed. Super organized. M is the Home Depot of organized. And the Lowes of Dads.

It’s shaping up to be an awesome hardware store-filled summer  for the boys…
