Lip-balm

blistex-blog

August is officially the month of Japan.

For those who aren’t ‘in the know’, M and I lived in Japan for about 3 years.

We met. We saw. We loved. We conquered.

M and I kept our relationship a secret for quite a while… once we started dating, that is…

We were outed in the randomest of ways. Mostly due to Sohee. Thanks Sohee!!

Every night in Hamamatsu in the early 2000’s meant hitting up Amigo’s Bar. Amigos was the Gaijin Hotspot in the city. Even if you didn’t want to go there, wanted to maybe try out something different…. you still ended up there at the end of the night. Drunk.

Or you started out the night there, got lured in by Paul (the owner) and then never ever left. Suddenly it was 8 am. You have been there 12 hours, are starving and your boss drives past as you are leaving and waves (future conversation regarding how you are such an early risier).

So, early in our courtship M and I start out the night there. Meeting a bunch of friends.

I remember riding our bikes there… pausing for a make-out session….applying some lip balm, and then heading in. Who would know that lip-balm would play such a huge part in our life.

Did you know that some lipbalm glows in the dark? Well, Sohee thought she would be a sweet girl and point that out. We denied it as firmly as we could.

“I lent him some”…. I think that was my big statement. And I thought that we both were rather convincing. When you’ve been riding a bike with a beer in one hand (as you do, in your twenties in a foreign country), it is easy to imagine that everyone will believe you. And if they don’t, then clearly they must be crazy.

So there we were, in Amigos, with glowing lips. And Sohee asking us both “Um, why are your lips glowing?”

Damn her and her intuitive eyes… And damn me and my crap excuses. My extemely unconvincing excuses, poor eye contact (which probably ruined any credibility that I might have had… excuse wise I mean…) and damning body language. Leaning into someone that you are currently romancing is a very obvious sign that you are… you know…

Well, anyways…. this is just a wee intro to a lovely month of Japan reminiscence…

Please stay tuned for all things romantic and Japanese.

xoxo a.m.

Amused

Amused-blog

As I came home from the gym this evening, I was welcomed with the lovely sounds of chatty V… Currently Little Man is babbling away and excitedly says ‘Mama’ and ‘Dada’ when either of us enter a room.

It pretty much melts my heart every-time he calls me ‘Mama’ in such an excited tone of voice. If I wasn’t sure how devoted I was to him, hearing ‘mama’ uttered on a regular basis has turned me into the ultimate baby slave. Since I already was (as is the whole family) this is more of a public confession than a realization.

Am I spoiling him? Who cares. M and I love watching him explore and he has free rein of the apartment (within reason, that is).
Every morning when Daddy and V go to the park, M encourages him to climb all over everything. Like he is a mountain goat. I have seen it…. I don’t play like that. I play Mummy-games. Those type of games are more ‘Let’s read a book’ type of games…. things along that line.

Daddy games involve  smashing things. And throwing  things. Violent stuff. Please God, I would like a daughter too….

*Ahem*

Anyways…my big confession of the evening started out with dinner. M made turkey burgers. So good.

Paired with Tater-tots. Also good. Perhaps not as healthy.

As I confront M with that very statement, he immediately got quite defensive. “Jame. It’s just potatoes…. There’s no fat at all”.

I dared to argue with him . Tater-tots do not fall into a healthy category with me. They fall into a delicious category. That’s a little bit different.

Well, my ‘healthy’ confrontation resulted in M storming to the freezer and that was followed by a detailed recitation of the complete health list. “Jame, they are 0% fat… Only 150 calories per 18 pieces. AND I baked them. Jame. Healthy.”

I followed this recital with laughter. M was not amused. I was.

Shockingly I have made it to 100 posts.

11 months ago when I started this, it was a very tentative step in a direction that I have always wanted go. My first few posts were so studied and awkward. I was very unsure. And perhaps slightly uncomfortable at what I was doing. But determined to do it, regardless….

The months passed and I gradually felt comfortable and then suddenly I just didn’t care anymore.

These are just my thoughts, my life, my experiences in this world and suddenly I was totally at ease sharing them with… well…. everyone…

So I appreciate very much the people that take the time to stop by and read about the things that are going on in my house and my life.

And as a show of my appreciation, here are a few tidbits about me that you may or may not know….

I am perhaps the worst parker you have ever seen. I don’t pull my car completely into the stall, I am always on a really awful angle and, what is worse, I don’t care…

I can’t argue to save my life. I forget half way through and what’s worse is that I move passed it quickly. And then wonder why we are still arguing? Why are we again?

I have a deep love of all things action (movie-wise I mean). I cannot resist an awesome one. Or a bad one. Or any one at all.

I have become a slave to my best friends daughter. She has me twisted around her little finger, but I am ok with that and can’t stop spoiling her rotten. And will probably do that to her sister too.

I might not be good at diapering. But I won’t totally admit it either…. because I am not sure if I am or not, you know, because it’s my first time being a mum and stuff….

Motherhood is a mind boggling thing. So many things to do, remember, argue about, remember and try to do better. So fascinating.

I love red wine.

I am sarcastic. But maybe not as much as my cousin, for she is indeed the Queen of all things sarcasm. And I worship at her feet for that.

The fact that Liam Neeson’s wife died makes me sad.

I love my husband. More than everything. But I love V more than everything everything.

I breathe deeply sometimes to retain my calm. Sometimes it happens a little more frequently then I would like.

I once saw a squirrel eat a piece of pizza in my parking lot. Surreal.

I think, perhaps, I am a crappy communicator.

I love the smell of Earl Grey tea, but caffeinated only. Decaf Earl Grey is just not the same. At all.

I am glad to live in the land of the hurricanes instead of the land of the earthquakes. Earthquakes freak me right out, after experiencing them in Japan.

I love Japan.

I love sushi. Salmon skin. Raw scallops. Raw tuna. Umeboshi (pickled plums). Japanese beer in little glasses. Edamame with coarse salt. Japanese festivals, heat, summers, beer, cherry blossoms, mochi and beardpapa and I am sure there are a billion things I forgot about.

I love sleep more than I ever knew. And miss it more than I ever knew too.

Continental breakfast is my ideal breakfast.

British comedies are the best. And sadly here in the South no-one know what I am talking about.

I love a rainy day.  I love a new bra. I love tea and scones. I love cold days that need warm blankets. I love snuggling and hope to teach that love to V.

I am touchy. AND emotional. AND moody. And unapologetic about all. And am pretty sure that my husband is used to everything by now….

A few personal things about me…. and of course, any questions, feel free to ask away.

And thank you again for reading. Your comments mean more than you will ever know….
