Holy!

Guacamole!!

Guacamole!!

Note to self:

Never let your child feed himself avocado. This is what I did last night and at the end of the meal, I wondered what on earth I was thinking…

I am trying to encourage spoon feeding right now. Although most of the food that he is eating right now is pick-up-able, sometimes I throw in a few things that are of a spoon fed nature. Avocados, rice pudding (Cosy Shack) a few other things like that. He just doesn’t have the dexterity quite yet.

Most of the things that I feed him are things that I think are yummy too. As a result, he is a huge papaya fan. Papaya is pretty much my favorite fruit ever and it is perfect for babies/toddlers. I loved feeding him guava, mango and papaya puree when he was a wee wee thing. These are jarred fruits that you would never ever ever find in Canada.

So, if I like it, I think that he should…. seems logical. And for the most part I am right. Avocado took a while. The first few times, it reached a level of hatred that fruit/veg has rarely reached. Suddenly though, there was an abrupt turn around. As long as its mashed, in a guacamole-like state, then it is all good.

Guacamole involves me feeding it to him. Which involves perhaps 2 bites that he allows me to feed him, him then grabbing the spoon, me grabbing another spoon and then us fighting over whose spoon goes in his mouth. So as I am trying to encourage independence and learning, I try to encourage him to experiment with his spoon.

Mostly this involves him waving it around, bits of food flying everywhere (and Chewie in ecstatic delight, dashing around in circles, looping through the highchair legs trying to catch all those airborne things).

Last night it involved a bowl with a suction-cup on the base of it that I attached to his highchair tray. And a spoon. And a bib. And me regretting that I let him eat dinner in a white tee-shirt. About 3 minutes later avocado was everywhere. all under his bib. All over his bib. All over his face, up his nose, on the back of his ears and what wasn’t in these places was firmly stuffed both behind and into the buckle of the straps on his highchair.

I had to carry him at arms length to the bathtub, avocado and corn dripping off of him (and the dog following closely behind).

That tub-scrub was heavy-duty. And the water was greenish at the end of that scrub….

This will probably not be a self-feeding even for a while, my kitchen needs time to recover! (for really interesting ideas for baby meals, please check out this neat site!)

Backyard

backyard-blog

As I try to think and write this evening, my mind is filled with  a million wandering thoughts. Most of which revolve around things like ‘What colour will I paint my bedroom/living room/other bedroom and that other other bedroom” and ‘painting’ in general. And moving.

M and I are now homeowners!

Holy freaking holy! Awesome! Exclamation point!!

About 10 days ago, I fell in-love with a townhouse.  It is just perfect. I then preceded to mentally move myself and family into it. Just in my head, mind you…. And before I had even told M anything about it.

I redecorated the upstairs rooms. I ripped up the laminate floor in the kitchen. I purchased furniture for the diningroom. I decorated the back patio with twinkle lights, cosy tables and one sweet barbeque. I made it ‘home’ in my head.

AND. Then  I got mad at M when he confronted me about being a little ‘over-the-top’ in-like with this place/neighbourhood/lifestyle etc.

Could I be any higher maintenance than I am already?!?! Ha! Seriously I am not.

But sometimes love just happens….. and love is what happened with me and this place when I opened that front door. Watched Little Man crawl up and down those few steps in the living room… and scootch across the living room floor at a neck-breaking speed. Leaving him for a few seconds, I wandered out into the back patio and mentally turned it into a gorgeous floral grotto, draped with heavily scented greenery (jasmine), the sound of falling water tinkling away in the background (kiddie pool) and a cool beverage in my hand under the umbrella (lemonade….ish…).

I then wandered back in, headed for the front porch and imagined our street at Christmas-time… Then I mentally painted the whole inside.

I might, just might, have gone a little over-board. Mentally, that is. In a non-mental way.

Which, of course, all makes sense once you think of it properly…. just like I suggest you should. Whole-heartedly. With all of your heart. With everything. All imagination. All mind. All everything in that scented, green bower that is my future back courtyard, filled with jasmine creeping all over the place….. with the sounds of V splashing away in his pool adding gorgeous watery sounds, filling the yard with the most delicious of all noises.

Family.

Secret club

motherhood-blog

I just started reading “The Happiest Toddler on the Block” in an effort to prepare myself for what will certainly happen and/or what is already happening.

The whole tag line of the book is “How to eliminate tantrums and raise a patient, respectful and cooperative child”. Now this sounds like a great plan to me! We’ve dabbled a bit in the tantrum pool… just a bit… However, if V is a combination of M and I, then for sure we will have some huge issues with stubbornness (me) and argumentativeness (M). Ok, both of those apply to both of us.

So far it is interesting. Basically it states that toddlers are like cavemen because their little brains are too immature (with patience, logic and language). It discusses key ways to communicate with children in order to decrease poor behavior. Some things I feel a little unsure about… it’s a tricky issue to tackle!

I mean, I see the point that Dr Karp is making, but at the same time I am unsure if I seriously am capable of doing the following:

Vincent says ” You want! You want! You want…. want…. WANT!! You want bottle now, right now!! But wait a minute honey, first we need to sit in our highchair before we have the bottle”.

Am I really capable of speaking like this? Without feeling like a total retard?! Not sure….

Toddler-ese is what this is called, and apparently (according to this book) it is quite effective. Is it?

I desperately hope so, especially as I am reading the ‘success’ stories and am imagining V and I as the end result of these stories. Minus the ‘ese’. Well, there might be a little bit of ‘ese in the house, but in public? That is where I feel a little bit iffy…

And lets ignore the fact that I already point and narrate everything when I am out in public with V. And sing songs. And blow raspberries. And really could care less who sees or hears me do all of these ridiculous things. Reading this book about advocating this sort of behavior times 50 makes me….well….laugh actually.

It makes me laugh as is is the greatest thing ever to glance across at another mum and realize that she is pretty much exactly on your path. As different as all of us mums look, we are all reading, doing and pretty much thinking the same thing. ALL THE TIME. How refreshing is it to know that you are not the only one reading and thinking these things.

It is a lovely secret membership and I welcome it. And am grateful for that unspoken support… xoxo to all my mums out there from a.m.

Update

atlantic-blog

I had been considering a name change for AGES…. but was having a hard time coming up with something that I thought would be right and fitting.

And I am pretty sure that I have found it….

Since this took weeks for me mull over and basically praying for some miracle ideas to fall from heaven  (and literally I just came up with it like 30 minutes ago),  I am feeling the creative juices flowing. And I will now disappoint you with a short post. But I am sure that I will thrill you tomorrow. With a longer one I mean!

I am quite interested in feedback in regards to the new name for the blog and the format. The name will definitely stay as I am in love with it. Can’t promise much with the format though… I’ve got to hit up my mastermind for some design details. So expect some changes in the months to come re: layout.

Feedback please!! xoxo a.m.

Jacket

jacket-blog

With an Internet blackout, I am typing this away on my desktop…. The blog-gods will be appeased with this… right?

Anyways I was thinking tonight about the amount of jackets I used to own when I lived back in Canada.

Oh the times of Talia and Jaime, those 2 cousins that lived together and had a huge hall-closet and between them had many a jacket. It was packed full of jackets….

In particular, I believed that Talia had a very nice woolen Pea-Coat that I adored. I think it came from L.L. Bean. I might have worn it every chance I could.

For some reason tonight while I was watching Big Brother, one of the contestants was wearing a jacket that not only reminded me of Talia, but also of University in general.

The jacket that Brendan was wearing was exceptionally cheap looking. Total faux-leather with faux-sheepskin on the collars. Awful. Reminded me of a jacket I owned in the ’90’s.

Faux leather…. Naugahyde to be exact.. Like my Gramp’s couch.

I thought that jacket was awesome. It cost $20, that I clearly remember. It was total faux-everything, and buttoned up like a suit-jacket. I wore it everywhere. I thought it made me look professional. Or cool. Or a combination of both. And then a friend of mine bought the same one…. Unprompted and without knowing that I had it. That must have meant that I had good taste, right?

And in retrospect, it was the most awful jacket you have ever seen. But it was the nineties, so that…well, that was the way it went, eh?

Again, that jacket-cupboard was full of lovely jackety things. All sorts of grey, black and dark brown. Several types of navy coats. An old smoking jacket. One or two coats made of synthetic materials… it was a glorious array of coats…and scarves and gloves… good times….

And then on a completely different topic, I just found this lovely blog which is full of pretty things to look at. And interesting things to read…. probably you want to go and check it out. For reals.

WME

happybaby-blog

I got home today thinking that things were pretty much in order….

Sped home, picked up V, dashed to Publix and got home at a reasonable time. 6 pm. Not too shabby!

Dinner preparations began. First some peas….

I heated them up, cooled them off a little, walked over to him and slowly spilled them onto his highchair top. He giggled. I guess the sight of all those peas rolling around was quite funny.

Peas are his new favorite vegetable to eat whole. He happily picks them off his tray and stuffs them into his little mouth. During this stuff-in time, I add some cubed Edam cheese while I heat up a veggie pattie in the microwave.

My new favorite foods for him are from *surprise* WholeFoods! I know thats a huge shocker… But they do have the best gluten/wheat free selection I have found in town, and also have an interesting selection of gluten-free toddler food.

My current favorite? HappyBaby‘s HappyBites. The veggie-tots are what are currently swinging around our kitchen…

I cooled the veggie-tot down on the counter, pick ed it up and hand delivered it to V’s table, to his apparent delight.

One piece in. No problem. And chewed to evident delight.

Number 2 hit that little mouth and the screams that issued after could seriously have woken the dead. I spun around, only to see V clawing at his little mouth.

Oh. My. God.

I quickly figured out that it was just too hot for that tender little palate. I swear I temperature tested it before hand…. bad mummy. I felt so horrible. That little face was so red and those little eyes were clenched shut. I did an ‘extraction’…. which means that I scooped that little mess right out of his mouth. Oh man. There was a hidden chunk of potato that was hotter than everything else. Oh that poor little mouth…

But problem solved… he has such a good temperament that he quickly moved past it and went on to stuff something else in there. Oh great. Same thing. Veggie tots. Hot.

Scream. Wail. Shriek. Claw at face. Turn red. Awesome.

By this time I was almost crying myself…. more mad at myself than anything. How could I have missed that piece that was slightly hotter than everything else? So much for my temperature testing skills…..

And then…..*sigh* it happened again.

Clearly I can’t tell temperature at all. Seriously!

This time it was so hot that those little chubby fists shook with frustration while those finger tried to claw everything out of that mouth.

Again, how did I miss this. Or was it just hot enough that, piled on top of the other hot things it pushed everything over the limit.

I felt awful. AWFUL.

Bad mummy. I completely checked everything temperature-wise…. perhaps I just…. oh… I don’t know…. I still feel awful. I gave him some ice-cream to cool that little mouth of his down. We brushed his teeth and off he went to bed.

Worst Mummy Ever. Total WME event. Embarrassingly enough, on top of all of this I felt the need to share this with random Internet-slash-family.

Clearly I am just looking for punishment…

Badassicalness

Celine-blog

A new feature I am thinking about adding to my blog as either a weekly or bi-monthly event. By event, I really mean ‘post’.

I am looking to feature interesting people and/or interesting blogs/websites. If this works the way I hope it will, I eventually want to add a give-away element to it too.

But for now, it will just be a feature….

Tonight’s Sunday Night Featurette will be….

~Celine B.~

Queen of cakes and sarcasm.

And a family member, so you know this is going to be flattering….. (she’s so purdy)

Brief history:

Celine hails from the West Coast of Canada. Or Wet Coast. Or however you like to call it. She migrated South, as all people tend to do, a few years ago and settled on the West Coast of Florida for a few years. She joined Publix and immediately began her meteoric rise. Quickly moving her way from associate (clerk) to Assistant Bakery Manager, mostly by sheer skill. And charm. She quickly moved inland to the Orlando area, where she is currently residing and plotting her take-over of all things bakery…

That Canadian work ethic is no match at all for… well…. anything. For real.

Especially considering the pure lack of ethic that appears to be so common these days…..

Skills:

That girl can bake a mean cake/pie/muffin/cupcake

That woman can tease a mean rock-a-billy poof (pending pictures).

That sister from another mister can decorate like you wouldn’t believe. And even if you do believe, if you saw it you still wouldn’t believe it could be that amazing.

She is amazingly creative, something which she has always had a flare for…. She shows it so clearly in her creations, especially the way her fingers delicately tease that fondant into the most interesting shapes.

Tattoo

cherry-muse-blog

Tattooed. Awesome.

Spending time in a tattoo studio is interesting. I’ve been in one several times before…. but this was the first time that I’ve been in one with someone that has been in one on a regular basis. She’s pretty colourful. And pretty. And pretty and colourful at the same time.

As was my experience….

Colourful.

And Pretty!!

But colourful.

I learned.

I learned things maybe I shouldn’t share with the public.

Things about going to Greece and France…. that aren’t really involved with travel. At all. Who knew. But in retrospect, it made lots of sense.

I also didn’t know that blow-jobs and chicken go hand-in-hand… Apparently they do. But that it also stops after marriage. So don’t get married or those two will no longer go hand in hand…. If they ever did. Except in the realm of imagination and tattoo parlours.

I had many conversations about drugs, chicken, foreign countries, sex, sex, sex, sex and sex. And penises. I didn’t even know how to pluralize that word. Thank god for spell-check.

Mostly I just listened and absorbed. Absorbed what? I couldn’t really say. It’s been absorbed already. It’s in there though, floating around. I am sure that it will all resurface at some point… Most likely on my next trip. Once C and I work out the kinks to my cap sleeve.

Did you know that she is my tattoo muse?

If you are looking for ideas, let me know…. she might consult, for a fee that is… I’ll make sure you get a family rate. No worries….
